'Grand Theft Auto V' Named Best Selling Game Of The Decade In Britain
This probably won't come as a massive surprise to any of you, but it turns out Grand Theft Auto V was the UK's best-selling game of the last decade. This is according to results from the Official Ukie Games Charts, compiled by GfK (via the BBC). Rockstar's open-world crime epic was first released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2013, before eventually making its way to PC, Xbox One, and PS4.
In that time, it has showed absolutely zero signs of slowing down. In November last year, it was revealed the (by that point) six-year-old game had shifted another five million copies in just six months, bringing the grand total of units sold to an eye-watering 115 million. I often wonder if people think there's a golden ticket hiding inside one of the boxes or something.
GTA V's enduring popularity is no doubt down to the game's substantial (and free) online component. While the single-player story is easily as good as GTA has ever been, the multiplayer-focused GTA Online has gone from strength to strength over the years, as Rockstar continue to support it with fulsome updates. Most recently, players were treated to the grand opening of an in-game casino, and later, the opportunity to assemble a squad and heist said casino.
"I think as the install base grows, if you're over the age of 17, it's a must-have title," Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick explained of the incredible continued sales to GamesIndustry.biz back in May.
"This title, remember, was developed for the last generation originally, and then a new version was developed for this generation. And it's pretty amazing that a title originally developed for last generation remains the standard-bearer for quality more than six years later."
The rest of the top ten best-selling games of the decade in the UK - which accounts for physical retail only - can be seen below. Again, you won't be too shocked to learn that the list is dominated by FIFA and Call Of Duty. Minecraft is obviously in there at third place too, because... well, it's Minecraft, innit?
- Grand Theft Auto 5
- Call of Duty: Black Ops
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
- FIFA 14
- FIFA 13
- FIFA 15
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
- FIFA 11
- FIFA 12
While we still have no idea exactly when GTA VI is set to arrive, I would imagine it has every chance of dominating this new decade in a similar fashion to its predecessor. That's assuming Rockstar intends to release it this decade. Who can honestly say for sure at this point?
