Hideo Kojima Confirms That PlayStation Exclusive ‘Death Stranding’ Is Behind Schedule
Famed game director and helmsman of the Metal Gear Solid franchise, Hideo Kojima, has told Japanese site J-Wave that his new game at Kojima Productions, the PlayStation-exclusive Death Stranding, has slipped just a little behind schedule.
Kojima stresses that, as we all know (hopefully), this is nothing unusual. IGN translates a quote from the interview, with him saying:
"It's common for studios to fall behind on their planned release date, and Death Stranding is very slightly behind our initial plan, but not behind by much."
Now, that'd be a lot easier to swallow if we even had a release date to work back from - so far, Death Stranding remains in a kind of release limbo, with speculation concerning a 2019 release now surely ready to be dismissed. (Remember when we thought it'd be June? Ahahaha... No.)
Maybe E3 will confirm a release date, in just a few months - but, let's be honest, with this game, it's equally likely that it won't.
What we also aren't too sure on is quite what Death Stranding is going to be. The videos we've seen have suggested a third-person action-adventure - and those who've seen more, like Netherlands-based Guerrilla Games (Death Stranding uses their Decima game engine), have been highly positive. But: what do you actually do, in this game? Maybe that's a question that only finally playing the thing will reveal.
However, it does sound like Death Stranding isn't too far from being the finished item. The J-Wave interview, via VG247, has Kojima saying that the team is "polishing the experience", which implies that a lot of the nuts and bolts stuff is working just fine.
And that's all she wrote, for now. I don't know why we would expect anything else but a rather enigmatic development period for a Kojima game, but nevertheless, it's kind of refreshing how little we really know about Death Stranding. I'm sort of tempted to just duck every piece of Actual Information, so I can go into it as blindly as possible.
