‘Horizon Zero Dawn 2’ All But Confirmed By New Job Listing
The idea of the fantastic post-post-apocalyptic Horizon Zero Dawn getting a sequel is something many gamers have been dreaming about since the first game dropped what seems like a lifetime ago, in 2017. But thanks to a recent swirling of rumours and insider wink-wink-nudge-nudging, it seems we could be on the cusp of such an announcement.
A bunch of new job listings (via GamesRadar) from Guerrilla Games - the team behind the first HZD and the fantastic Killzone series - have been posted, with one seeming to explicitly point to the fact that development of Horizon Zero Dawn 2 is under way.
The listing is for a Technical Vegetation Artist which calls for the successful candidate to undertake "the creation of vegetation assets that are used to dress the game world". So far so normal, I hear you say. However, the posting goes on to say: "Within Guerrilla, we have four teams dedicated to creating the stunning environments of Horizon [and] one team focuses on the creation of lush and stunning vegetation."
Ah. Yes. That sounds conclusive, does it not? Unless they're working on an entirely different project that just happens to be called Horizon.
For the uninitiated, Horizon Zero Dawn follows the exploits of Aloy, a young woman trying to find her way in a dire future where machines have overthrown humans as the dominant force on earth. The machines now manifest themselves as hulking, animal-like monstrosities that roam the wastelands. It's a bit like Darlington high street.
With the launch of the PlayStation 5 now confirmed and on its way in (very late) 2020, it's entirely possible that Guerrilla are aiming for a similar window of release for Horizon Zero Dawn 2, perhaps making it a launch title and console exclusive. Unless the game is a fair way along in development though, that might be a bit of a stretch.
Horizon Zero Dawn won a slew of awards when it first came out, and has sold over 10 million copies to date, so it would be no huge surprise to learn a sequel has been greenlit. Outside of a fantastic expansion in the form of The Frozen Wilds we've seen nary hide nor hair of Aloy and friends. But whether the sequel will follow on directly from the story of the previous game, or give us a new one entirely, remains to be seen.
