Kaitlyn Dever Would 'Love' To Play Ellie In HBO's 'The Last Of Us'

Kaitlyn Dever Would 'Love' To Play Ellie In HBO's 'The Last Of Us'

Ever since HBO announced that it was collaborating with Naughty Dog on a live-action adaptation of The Last Of Us, fans have been busy assembling their own dream cast lists. Kaitlyn Dever, star of Booksmart and Netflix's Unbelievable, is far and away one of the most popular fan choices to take on the role of Ellie. The good news? Dever would love to oblige.

Speaking to Collider, the actor expressed her desire to take on the role and explained her own experience with the critically acclaimed PlayStation exclusive. She even reminded everyone that she's worked with Naughty Dog before - she played Nathan Drake's daughter Cassie at the end of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. That, in particular, is a real "Today I Learned" moment for me.

"I obviously have been seeing the Internet, and I've obviously been seeing a lot of [the fan casting]," Dever said. "Neil Druckmann [TLOU director], I worked with him on Uncharted 4. I think he's one of the smartest guys I've ever met, and one of the sweetest. And I'm not shutting it down, you know? I'm not shutting it down. I would absolutely love to do that."

Druckmann will be working alongside Chernobyl writer Craig Mazin on the TV version of The Last Of Us, which will adapt the events of the 2013 game. Obviously there are all kinds of factors that could prevent Dever from being able to take the role, including whatever plans the showrunners have already or Dever's own availability. But her existing working relationship with Druckmann could lead to the casting we're all hoping for.

Besides, Dever is also a big fan of the game. If recent, more successful, adaptations of video game properties have taught us anything, it's that an inherent love and understanding of the source material is kind of crucial.

"I am a huge fan of that video game," she said. "I think it is a beautiful story. It's just a wonderful narrative, and I fell in love with that game when it came out. And I played it with my dad and we just had the best time. I'm not very good at it. My aim is really bad, but I'm working on getting better at playing."

I'm sure fans will also be glad to know that Hugh Jackman was one of the actors Dever mentioned when she was asked who she'd like to see play Joel alongside her. The former Wolverine is, of course, another popular pick among fans right now. It's still early days for HBO's The Last Of Us, but you can tide yourself over by taking a look at our very own dream cast list. Yes, Jackman and Dever were our top picks too... not that we're biased or anything.
