Kojima In Talks To Make A Horror Game With Manga Artist Junji Ito

Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding creator Hideo Kojima is in talks with acclaimed horror manga artist Junji Ito to work on a new video game. The two had previously collaborated on doomed Silent Hill revival P.T., alongside film director Guillermo del Toro.

During an interview with Viz Media at [email protected] 2020, Ito was asked if he was currently involved in any video game development. The artist confirmed that Kojima had already approached him with a new idea for a horror game, but also added it was early days for the project and that details were very thin on the ground.

"So, the simple answer is no," Ito's translator Junko Goda explained. "However, I do know director Kojima and [I] have been in conversation that he might have a horror-based game that he may be doing, and so he has invited me to work on that, but there are no details on it yet."

While this is all fairly vague, it's far from the first time that we've heard Kojima wants his next project to be a horror game. Back in November last year, right after the release of Death Stranding, the developer revealed that he was preparing for his next project by watching a ton of horror films to "awaken his horror soul". The end goal, apparently, is to "make the scariest horror game".

Kojima Wants To Create A 'Revolutionary' Horror Game That'll Make You Poop Yourself

published at7 months ago

In an interview earlier this year, Kojima once again touched on his intention to get back into horror. Speaking with BAFTA back in April, he teased that he already has ideas in mind, and that he wants players but soil themselves through fear. Ambitious.

"P.T. ended as just an experiment, but I would like to make another horror game someday," Kojima said. "Something that uses a revolutionary method to create terror, that doesn't just make you pee your pants, but crap them.

"I already have ideas in mind. I'm easily frightened myself, so I have confidence that I could create something more terrifying than perhaps others could."

If Kojima is returning to horror - which seems increasingly likely - the world better watch out. To this day, P.T. remains one of the most genuinely terrifying video game experiences I've ever played through, and that was just a teaser. Just imagine what Kojima could do with the time and resources to make a full-length horror video game.
