'Left 4 Dead 2: The Last Stand' Is Live Now And Completely Free

Cancel your weekend plans, because Left 4 Dead 2 is back, baby. Okay, so the classic multiplayer zombie shooter never actually went away... but its first content update in nearly a decade just went live, and that gives us as good an excuse as any to dive back in and start blasting down zombies like there's no damn tomorrow.

Left 4 Dead 2: The Last Stand is a fan-developed project that Valve has officially endorsed and released - presumably because it can only commit to making about one game every ten years on its own. The product of 30 passionate fans working with input from Valve for close to a year, The Last Stand boasts new maps, overhauled animations, a brand-new campaign, and plenty more besides.

"It has been many years since the infection first hit. Radio silence, no sign of life, nothing but lingering hopes... CEDA is not going to save us," a blog post from Valve reads. "But there is hope! A few brave souls have continued the fight against all odds, and soon we can all benefit from their resilience."

The Last Stand includes 26 new Survival mode maps, updated animations, restored voicelines, a bunch of new melee weapons, two new mutations, 30 new achievements, and a whole mess of bug fixes. There's also a new campaign, four new scavenge maps, returning infected from the original Left 4 Dead, and improved UI options. This is one hell of a content update for a game that released 11 years ago, I have to say.

Left 4 Dead 2: The Last Stand is available on PC via Steam right now, and it won't cost you a thing. Just make sure that you leave a thank you for the fans who put so much time and effort into breathing new life into a classic.

The Last Stand has been so much of a hit so far, in fact, that Left 4 Dead 2 has actually found its way back into the top ten most-played Steam games. According to the Steam Charts, there are currently 37,000 people back on the game and presumably enjoying the new update. That's a real testament to both the enduring quality of Left 4 Dead 2, and the amazing things these fans accomplished with The Last Stand DLC.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to get the old gang back together. We've got some zombies to take on.
