Metacritic’s Highest Rated Games Of The Decade Holds Some Surprises

Metacritic’s Highest Rated Games Of The Decade Holds Some Surprises

As we rapidly approach the close of the decade, games publications everywhere are making their offerings to the list gods. You may have seen some of ours already: our Greatest Games Of The Decade; the Essential Indie Video Games Of The Decade, even; and in a desperate plea not to be smited, a list of The Video Games We Wish We'd Played In 2019. Yay, the gods are capricious creatures, who love a good bit of administration.

Even sites like Metacritic aren't free of their busybody ways, forcing the number crunchers at the site - which collects together review scores from other publications and produces an average for each game - into list action. And as an offering to the list gods they've produced a list of the 50 highest rated games of the past decade.

As one of the few people who didn't own a Wii, I've not played Super Mario Galaxy 2, which makes for a surprising number one. Though, that it holds that spot ten years after its launch has got me intrigued to go and give it a play. Another surprise is Pac-Man at number 16 - while a cracking version of the pill-chomping arcade game, it's holding its own against very highly-regarded games.

Metacritic's also taken a look at a load of sites' different best of the decade top 10 lists and created a list of its own. So a list of lists, then - the elder gods will love that. You can give it a read over here. Quick spoiler, it doesn't include Super Hexagon, so already I'm doubting the credentials of my fellow journalists.
