Microsoft has finally given us the news we've all been waiting for: the release date for the next Xbox console.

Well, at the E3 gaming convention, the tech company revealed it will be dropping during the holiday period next year - perfect timing for a Christmas surprise.

The new console, currently called Project Scarlett, will be four times more powerful than Xbox One.

"This isn't just a console launch, this is about the future of gaming", said Xbox head Phil Spencer.

Sadly, no one got to see what the console will actually look like, but we have been promised that all achievements, friends and progression will carry over from Xbox One. It'll also have 120 fps, 8k, next generation ray tracing and drastically reduced loading times.

More to come.
