‘Minecraft’ On PS4 Is Getting Cross-Play And Access To Minecraft Marketplace

While Minecraft has been available on the PS4 for years it's been a different version from the other consoles. At first this was because all the versions of the game were separate, but in the past couple of years across PC, Xbox, Switch, and mobile have all converged to a single version of the game with only PlayStation left on the outside. All those other platforms could play together, build together, and share together while PlayStation players could only play with other PlayStation players. That all comes to an end tomorrow on December 10.

Minecraft developer Mojang is about to release the Minecraft Bedrock version on PlayStation tomorrow. "The Bedrock version of Minecraft is the unified version of the game that offers the same experience across all consoles," Mojang's senior creative writer Kelsey Howard writes in the post announcing its release. "All that glorious, unified code means that you'll be playing the same game as your pals on Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Windows 10, and mobile! So, yes - that means you get cross-play between those different consoles."

When PlayStation players are up and running on the Bedrock version they'll also have access to the Minecraft Marketplace, meaning they can get the same worlds, skins, and minigames as all other players.

While Minecraft Bedrock version is a different version of the game to the one PlayStation players currently have access to, they won't need to buy it again. Mojang is releasing it as a free update. The next time you boot up your PlayStation after release your current version of the game will be updated to the cross-play version.

If the update process is anything like when the Xbox version of Minecraft was shifted to the Bedrock version, you'll keep all your achievements.

Essentially, this is just a good news update. For a game all about construction, this update is building bridges and breaking walls between all the different platforms.
