'The Witcher' Is Massive New Franchise That'll Get Season After Season, Says Netflix Boss

'The Witcher' Is Massive New Franchise That'll Get Season After Season, Says Netflix Boss

I hope you've been saving up those coins, because you're gonna need to toss an awful lot more of them to your Witcher in the next few years. Yes, Netflix's live-action fantasy series The Witcher has been a phenomenal hit, and the streaming service has said Geralt's adventures are only just getting started.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings revealed in the company's Q4 earnings report that The WItcher is "a massive new franchise that will develop season after season". This is bound to come as a relief to fans everywhere, especially since 2019 saw Netflix cut a bloody swathe through its original programming, cancelling a ton of promising shows.

I guess as long as The Witcher continues to bring in the viewers and make that sweet cash, we don't need to worry about it going anywhere. In the same report, Netflix claimed that the Henry Cavill-fronted show was on track to become the most-watched first season of content in history of the service. Apparently, an impressive 76 million "member households" checked out The Witcher within its first four weeks of release.

We also know that The Witcher's success had a knock-on effect for both the novels and the games. That's the kind of synergy I expect Netflix loves to see from a potential mega franchise, and something shows like The OA and Glow could never match, regardless of how great they are. Unless Glow is based on a series of books and games that I've not yet heard about, in which case... please point to them.

Netflix's 'The Witcher' Officially Renewed For Season 2

published ata year ago

Oh, and who could forget the "viral musical hit" 'Toss A Coin To Your Witcher'? Jaskier's song was recently released on Spotify, where I imagine it'll continue to feed into the constantly growing behemoth that is The Witcher.

Season two of The Witcher has already started production and is expected to air sometime in 2021. However, it seems Netflix has no intention of taking its foot off the gas. To tide fans over while they wait for the next season of adventures, Netflix has announced an anime spinoff movie called The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf.

We don't know exactly when this animated feature will hit the streaming service, but the expectation is that it'll be at some point this year in order to bridge the gap between seasons and, presumably, keep Geralt's world in everyone's minds.

Before The Witcher had even aired, showrunner Lauren S Hissrich said that she could see the show running for years. She also added that there's more than enough content from the original novels that can be adapted. So between her and Netflix, I guess The Witcher really could become the next big fantasy franchise.
