Fortnite Was The Most-Played Nintendo Switch Game In 2018

Nintendo has revealed the 21 most-played Switch games of 2018. And, to little surprise, the free-to-play battle royale sensation Fortnite tops the list.

With only a handful of major IP launches in 2018, including late-comer Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - the only game that, if it had released earlier, had a (small) chance at becoming number one - Fortnite eased its way to the top, bettering the likes of the second placed The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (released back in March 2017) and third placed Super Mario Odyssey (from October 2017).

You might think that, alongside the game's billion-dollar success on console, PC, and mobile, its first place position was a given. But to give the Epic Games-developed title credit, Fortnite had a notable disadvantage compared to titles released earlier in the year, as it only came to Switch during E3 2018 in June.

But this mid-year release didn't slow download numbers, of course. By the end of October, when the Switch had sold around 23 million units, Nintendo announced that Fortnite had been downloaded by almost half of the console's owners [via VG247].

Compared to Breath of the Wild, the joint-highest-rated Switch game to date (alongside the aforementioned Mario adventure), which needed double that time to sell 6.7 million copies and cost the price of a standard game (£50), it's clear to see the impact that a free-to-play model has had on Fortnite's rise to the top. I wonder if it would've been as successful if it cost to own, like PUBG.

But that's another story. Going back to the top 21, games developed exclusively for Switch are amongst the most popular for Nintendo's handheld/docked console.

Bar Fortnite, the rest of the top 5 are first-party Nintendo titles, and over half on the list are Switch-exclusives. Here's the full 21:

1. Fortnite

2. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

3. Super Mario Odyssey

4. Splatoon 2

5. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

6. FIFA 19
