Norman Reedus: “I Like The Fact That ‘Silent Hills’ Didn’t Happen”
Back in 2014, Konami released P.T. - a playable teaser and announcement for a new Silent Hills game. It was to be a collaboration between Metal Gear Solid series director Hideo Kojima and film director Guillermo del Toro. And at the very end of the demo it was revealed that Silent Hills would feature Norman Reedus, the actor who plays Darryl in The Walking Dead.
But, it wasn't to be: Kojima and Konami parted ways, scuppering the chances of Silent Hills being made. Konami went as far as pulling P.T. from the PlayStation Store, making it impossible to access unless you already had it installed on your console. Despite what could have been, Reedus has now said that he's happy Silent Hills didn't happen.
In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Reedus explains that Death Stranding, the game Kojima made instead and that comes out on November 8, is a more exciting prospect.
"[Hideo and Guillermo] said Sony's back in with Hideo and we're going to make a brand-new game. I was more excited about that, to be honest, because Hideo came down to San Diego Comic-Con and had an iPad and was showing me some of the graphics he was working on, which were just mind-blowing."
The advantage of a wholly new game was that there was no legacy. "It was completely different," Reedus says. "Silent Hills had the backstory and people knew that game, knew what it was about and what it would look like. When that went away, I was bummed, but when Hideo described what we were doing next, I completely forgot about it. I was like, thank god that didn't work, because this is way better. This is a completely different thing."
Reedus has enjoyed developing Death Stranding because it's meant he's got to know Kojima. "I've been with Hideo at the Game Awards, and he's like The Beatles," Reedus says. "Grown men in their 40s are screaming with tears in their eyes, like Elvis just walked into the room. I'm like, who is this guy? The Hideo that I know is a friend of mine. He's had dinner at my house, met my girlfriend and my cat. He's always been super personable and such a friendly guy with a great sense of humour. He's great to hang out with. I've really gotten to know the mind of Hideo a little bit.
"I like the fact that Silent Hills didn't happen, to be honest, because I've gotten such a peek into the way he works and the way he thinks, and I'm completely blown away by this guy."
We were less taken with Death Stranding than Reedus, in part because the story is a mess that detracts from the systems of the game. Though, even with Kojima walking him through it, Reedus didn't understand the story at first. "He revealed it in bits and pieces, and I'll admit that some of those bits and pieces I was like, 'What are you talking about?'."
