'Overwatch' Boss Tells 'Super Smash Bros' Dev It Can Have Any Character It Wants

'Overwatch' Boss Tells 'Super Smash Bros' Dev It Can Have Any Character It Wants

With Overwatch coming to Nintendo Switch later this month, it seems like it's only a matter of time before one of the characters from Blizzard's hugely popular team-based multiplayer shooter joins the increasingly stuffed roster of fighters offered by Super Smash Bros Ultimate.

We already know that there are (virtually) no limits to the characters allowed into what was formerly a Nintendo mascot brawler, what with the likes of Sonic, Snake, and Cloud Strife all joining the franchise over the years.

We also know that Smash director Masahiro Sakurai has plans for further DLC characters as we head into 2020, so the only thing really standing in the way of an Overwatch/Super Smash Bros Ultimate crossover is Blizzard.

Fortunately, it seems Blizzard is just as on board with the idea of an Overwatch character storming Super Smash Bros Ultimate as the fans are. Jeff Kaplan, Vice President at Blizzard Entertainment and Lead Director on Overwatch recently said in an interview with IGN that Sakurai could use any character he wanted in Smash.

"To the Smash Brothers team, whatever character you want, we love them all. They're all our babies, you can have any single one of them. We have 31 to choose from," he said. It just goes to show that these days, pretty much everyone wants to see their characters in Smash Bros.

It's genuinely getting to be a mark of pride for creators to have their creations in a game that has evolved beyond a celebration of Nintendo to become a festival of gaming history. This is probably why the likes of Konami and Square Enix are so happy to allow characters like Cloud and Snake to join the fray.

While Kaplan would be happy to have any Overwatch fighter join Smash, he did say that he'd go for Tracer if he had to pick just one. "Tracer's our girl, Tracer's our mascot. She'd be my first choice," he said. "There's a lot of great runners up. I think a lot of people can immediately see Doomfist gameplay applying to Smash, but if it were up to me, I'd like to see Tracer."

There's just one more DLC character left to announce in the current run of bonus fighters for Super Smash Bros Ultimate, and it really could end up being any famous face from gaming at this point. We've already had Joker, Banjo and Kazooie, Hero from Dragon Quest, and Terry Bogard is on the way.

Given that a little game called The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt comes to Nintendo Switch the same day as Overwatch, I'm personally hoping that Geralt of Rivia steps into the ring, but I'd love to see Tracer somewhere down the line too.
