PlayStation Working On Multiple PS5 Titles That Could 'Make Or Break' The Console
It's fair to say that all eyes are on Sony as we inch closer and closer to the arrival of next-generation consoles. With superior sales and more, better-received exclusives, many would argue that the PS4 was the clear winner of this generation - but can Sony recapture that same success with the PS5?
PlayStation CEO and President Jim Ryan seems to think so. In a fantastic new interview with GamesIndustry.biz, the PlayStation boss revealed just a few more details about the company's mysterious next-gen hardware. Among those nuggets of information, we learned that Sony is working on multiple (presumably exclusive) next-gen titles that could "make or break" the PS5.
While it's true that exclusives can make or break any console, there's little doubt that PlayStation fans will be left with incredibly high expectations when it comes to what the PS5 offers. After all, the current generation has seen a stunning reboot in God of War, a sublime superhero adventure in Marvel's Spider-Man, and a bold open-world odyssey in Horizon Zero Dawn.
That's to say nothing of the likes of Bloodborne and Uncharted 4, and we've still got The Last Of Us Part II and Ghost Of Tsushima to come. Mercy me.
The good news, according to Ryan, is that the various studios cooking up titles for PS5 have a ton of positive feedback when it comes to developing for the next-gen hardware.
"One thing that makes me particularly optimistic that what we're hearing from developers and publishers, is the ease in which they are able to get code running on PlayStation 5 is way beyond any experience they've had on any other PlayStation platform," Ryan explained.
"As we move towards the next-generation in 2020, one of our [Sony's] tasks - probably our main task - is to take that community and transition it from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5, and at a scale and pace that we've never delivered on before."
This is all terribly exciting, but what about the damn games? What exclusives might the console launch with? Which will arrive in the console's first year?
We can certainly assume that sequels to God of War and Marvel's Spider-Man are on the way, given how well they sold. I'd also bet on seeing enhanced ports of The Last Of Us Part II and Ghost Of Tsushima at some point in the PS5's first year.
Beyond that? There have been increasingly intriguing rumblings regarding a follow-up to Horizon Zero Dawn, including the recent implication that the game's developers are working on some kind of CG announcement trailer... perhaps for some kind of grand PlayStation 5 reveal event?
