PlayStation's X Button Has Been Called Cross All This Time, Sony Claims
Gamers are a stubborn bunch, typically unable to agree on much, though there are some cast-iron exceptions. One such exception is the name we all have for the button just south of the triangle button on a PlayStation controller. It is known as, I'm certain we can all agree, the X ("Ex") button.
I don't remember there ever being any debate as to what the four buttons on a PlayStation controller should be called. Triangle, Circle, Square, and "Ex". That's it. That's how it is, and that's how it has always been - except according to Sony, it's not as simple as all that.
Maybe Sony got bored and decided it was time to cause some chaos on Twitter, or maybe they're just sick and tired of people calling the "Ex" button the wrong thing, but according to PlayStation UK, the aforementioned button has always been known as "Cross." Believe me, I'm as confused and incensed as you are.
The debate was first started by a user on Twitter who I'm convinced simply wanted to start an argument for the sake of it, as the clear majority decided that it has never been and should never be known as the Cross button. While it could simply have ended there, PlayStation UK waded into the debate to declare that we're all wrong and have always been wrong.
"If Cross is called X (it's not), then what are you calling Circle?" PlayStation argued, full well knowing the hell they were causing with their carefully chosen words. You can't just claim something like this and step away, but that's exactly what PlayStation did. They detonated a bomb on Twitter and left us to pick up the pieces. Cowards.
Naturally, it doesn't matter what the company who invented the controller tell us, the people swiftly revolted and made their arguments for why the button should be known as "Ex." These arguments range from the simple ("Anybody who says Cross is a cop"), to the scientific (see the below Tweet).
If the above isn't definitive enough for you, how about a splash of good old fashioned democracy? 81 percent of the 135,000 who responded to PlayStation's Twitter poll on the subject believe it to be called "Ex." Basically then, it's "Ex". It has always been, and will always be. Let's just agree to pretend this whole Cross issue never happened.
