Pokémon Anime's New Series Tells The Story Of Baby Pikachu

Pokémon Anime's New Series Tells The Story Of Baby Pikachu

For over 20 years now, Ash has journeyed the world catching Pokémon, challenging trainers, and generally being a bit rubbish. Friends have come and gone over the course of Ash's travels, presumably because they eventually realise how useless is.

However, one ally that's always stuck by the hapless trainer is his very first Pokémon partner, the adorable Pikachu. Now, thanks to the newest season of the anime, it looks like we're finally going to learn more about what the yellow cutie's life was like before he was ultimately imprisoned by Professor Oak and sold into a life of eternal servitude.

We already knew that the upcoming series of the popular anime would have deep roots in the past of Pokémon as well as one eye on the future of the franchise, but a recent trailer for the first episode of the new run, called "Birth Of Pikachu" will show flashbacks that focus on an adventure that Pikachu had back when he was just a sweet little Pichu.

Check out the trailer below. LOOK AT LITTLE BABA PICHU. What a darling.

Here's the full synopsis for the episode, as translated by the fine folk at Crunchyroll:

"In a forest somewhere in Kanto, there once was a lonely Pichu. This Pichu - who was still quite young - had a certain encounter and farewell. This took place shortly before Ash and his partner Pikachu started travelling together. This is the beginning of the anime 'Pocket Monster'."

I can't say that I was ever particularly desperate to learn about the early days of Pikachu, but now that it's on the table I'm certainly intrigued enough to give a watch. If nothing else, it'll be interesting to see what actually made Pikachu such an uncooperative piece of work in original first episode. Maybe his parents got shot by hunters or something.

As we wrote back in September, the newest series of Pokémon will be a globe-trotting affair that takes place in the new region of Galar, as well as Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, and all the other previous regions.

The new series will also feature a brand new protagonist who travels alongside, and presumably learns from, Ash. This new main character is called Go, and is a ten-year old with a Scorbunny for a partner who wants to catch 'em all, just like his new mate Ash.

The latest series of Pocket Monsters airs in Japan on November 17.
