Pokémon Reveal Top 10 Critters Of The Year, As Voted By You

It's February 27th and as any self-respecting Pokémon trainer will tell you, that means it's Pokémon Day! Uncoincidentally, it also happens to be the day that the results of the 'Pokémon of the Year' vote are revealed. With 890 monsters to choose from, the winner was certainly not a foregone conclusion.

The winner was revealed as Greninja just a short time ago via a Youtube stream from The Pokémon Company. You can check out the top 10 in the video below though it seems that Greninja won by quite a margin, pulling in nearly 40,000 more votes than Lucario who came in at number two. The others to make up the top ten (in ascending order) were Mimikyu, Charizard, Umbreon, Sylveon, Garchomp, Rayquaza, Gardevoir, and Gengar.

Pokémon Card Illustrator Wasn't Convinced The Game Would Be A Success

It's an interesting change to last year's top ten in which around 50,000 fans cast their votes on Reddit. Those results saw Charizard take the top spot while Gengar came in at number two. The Reddit vote didn't have quite the numbers that this year's event generated so it's perhaps unfair to compare them. And, of course, there weren't the extra monsters from Pokémon Sword/Shield to choose from - though none of them seem to have impacted the top ten this year, regardless.

This time round, the vote was backed by Google and announced earlier this month, again allowing players to vote for their favourite Pokémon. Participants could cast their vote for one Pokémon per region once a day until February 14th when the voting closed. The total votes cast for each monster can be found here.

In related Pokémon news, newcomer seven-year-old Simone Lim won the Pokémon Sword and Shield Junior Championships grand final last weekend, going up against an opponent who boasted several international championship wins under his belt. Lim won many viewers hearts as she hugged her Eevee plushy while making her acceptance speech.
