Pirates Get Festive With The 'Sea Of Thieves' Christmas Update

Microsoft-owned developer Rare has rolled out the first ever Sea Of Thieves Christmas update, bringing a whole list of bug fixes and festivity treats to the pirate exploration.

First things first, Version 1.4.1 - the last patch of 2018 - irons out issues that came alongside November's Shrouded Spoils expansion. Rare listed numerous now-removed bugs in their release notes, but the studio also implemented a handful of well-needed tidy ups.

Are you ready? Here we go: 1.4.1 shortens loading times, improves the UI layout of Commendation details for Bilge Rat Adventures, modifies visibility for Bone Crusher Cannons, resets the key binding for quick cycling bananas, adds new music and SFX when receiving Commendations, and triggers fog music and SFX much earlier. Phew. Check out the full patch notes to see every improvement. But now, onto the fun stuff.

According to Rare, "the Pirate Lord has decided to reward the sheer volume of piracy displayed with a gift for every pirate who sails the seas during December, in an initiative he's calling Gilded Gifts."

If you visit Duke at any Outpost tavern in December, you can purchase a Gilded Voyage for 0 Doubloons - nothing, in non-pirate talk. This unique, free voyage is said to reward highly, adding "some real holiday joy to your inventory". Don't miss this one.

But make sure you select your Gilded Gift carefully - "you can only buy one," Rare notes. Choose between Gold Hoarders, Order of Souls, Merchant Alliance or (if you've reached Pirate Legend status) Athena's Fortune.

Once acquired from Duke, the new voyage can be found in your inventory. You'll only have the one chance to complete it, though, "so think hard about when you want to tackle it and make sure you have the time to see it through!"

As a bonus, rewards from the festive voyage are worth considerably more than the standard rate, meaning reputation levels and gold take will increase dramatically. Sadly, not enough so for all of this year's Christmas shopping.

What do you think about this update? Do you play Sea of Thieves? Did you like its latest expansion? Make sure you let us know.
