'Resident Evil 3' Remake Officially Announced, And It's Coming Soon

Well, the worst kept secret in gaming has been made official. Following months of leaks and speculation, the Resident Evil 3: Nemesis remake was finally announced during PlayStation's recent State of Play broadcast - and it's coming soon. How soon? April 3rd, 2020. It's time to get excited, kids.

This ground-up remake is a re-imagining of 1999's Resident Evil 3. Set in Raccoon City around the same time as Resident Evil 2 (which also got a stunning remake earlier this year), Resi 3 sees Jill Valentine attempt to escape the zombie-infested city before it's too late. That's easier said than done, of course, as Jill and her fellow S.T.A.R.S. members are stalked by the unstoppable mutant assassin known as Nemesis.

Check out the reveal trailer below.

"Jill's harrowing escape takes place in the panic-stricken hours leading up to and following the events of the acclaimed best-selling Resident Evil 2," Capcom writes in a press release. "Intense combat and puzzle solving combine to deliver the heart-pounding final chapter of Raccoon City's collapse. The horrific settings from the original game and new content come to life as never before with RE Engine."

In a particularly inspired move, Capcom has opted to bundle Resident Evil 3 with the previously-revealed asymmetrical online multiplayer spinoff Resident Evil Resistance. First announced back in September, Resistance is a 4v1 experience in which a group of four survivors need to work together to overcome the traps, monsters, and obstacles set by the one "Mastermind" player.

"Manipulate the environment and wield a deck of cards to place vicious creatures, set traps and weaponized security cameras to snare hapless Survivors," Capcom writes of the multiplayer mode.

"A first for the franchise, Masterminds can even directly control elite bioweapons like G-Birkin and Tyrant. In turn, four Survivors must effectively work together, making the most of a variety of weapons and each player's unique special abilities, to stand a chance of escaping the experiment before time runs out."

‘Resident Evil 3' Remake Demo Is Coming Soon, Confirms Capcom

There were more than a few fans who were unhappy with the idea of a Resi multiplayer spinoff at the time, of course. Now? I don't think anyone can have a problem with it being an optional mode in such a frequently requested remake. I reckon Capcom knew exactly what it was doing all along, the sly dog.

Resident Evil 3 is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. You'll be able to pre-order the game from certain retailers and net yourself a "Classic Costume Pack", if you fancy it. The DLC includes the original - if arguably massively impractical - design for Jill Valentine, and a slick new hairstyle for Carlos Oliveira. A Collector's Edition is also available, details of which you can see below alongside a slew of new Resi 3 and Resistance screens, direct from Capcom.
