Rockstar Could Be Working On Brand New IP Entitled ‘Project Medieval’
Fresh rumours are beginning to circulate that GTA, Bully and Red Dead Redemption developer Rockstar could be working on a brand new, open world game based in medieval times.
While this information itself is not brand new (there were some rumblings a while back that something called 'Project Medieval' was being looked at in secret by the devs), this is the first time in a while we have tangible proof that cogs might be turning internally.
Today's news comes from the now-edited LinkedIn page of Rockstar character artist Pawas Saxena (via GamesRadar+) who noted that the company were hiring for somebody to come and create "modular environment pieces with organic finish carefully following medieval architectural style." Of course, just because it's been edited, doesn't mean the post was missed, and some-eagle eyed Redditors were quick to pounce.
Further to this, another Reddit post by user /iknowstuff312 states that 'Project Medieval' will be coming our way before either Bully 2 or GTA 6 (as previously reported) with a Q1 2021 release date, which would of course put it on track to be a next-gen title - possibly even cross-gen for the late adopters.
The post which should absolutely be taken with a giant helping of salt also says that the open-world title would feature sword-fighting / dueling as a mechanic, which sounds ridiculous and amazing at the same time.
We reported back in August that Rockstar might have been working on a sequel to the long-forsaken Bully franchise, which would feature protagonist Jimmy Hopkins attending college. Interestingly, this report carried the speculation that Bully 2 could be coming as early as October 2020, which would be a brutal turnaround if Rockstar are also working on this medieval game and GTA 6.
While we're on the subject of GTA 6, we also reported the news that the game was 'currently in production', which sprang from a motion capture artist adding the title to his resume.
Whether 'Project Medieval' is real or not will likely come out in the following weeks and months, but with the success of games like Mordhau, Kingdom Come: Deliverance and of course The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (although that's a few years old at this point and not strictly medieval) I'd love to see Rockstar's take on the time period. A psychotic knight running around ye olde Nottingham, stealing horses and making jest at nobles and peasants alike? Yes, yes, I'd like that very much.
