Smash Bros Creator Confirms Goku Will Never Be In The Game, Sorry Guys

Smash Bros Creator Confirms Goku Will Never Be In The Game, Sorry Guys

Super Smash Bros Ultimate, with its roster of over 70 characters, represents the biggest and most ambitious video game crossover of all time. Characters from different franchises, and entirely different companies, who we would never have expected in a million years would be able to face one another in battle, are suddenly pummeling each other in the face for our entertainment.

Back in my day, you played Smash Bros and you got Nintendo characters. Yoshi, Link, Mario, Samus, Kirby, the usual suspects. It made sense, because it was a Nintendo franchise. Eventually Solid Snake and Sonic the Hedgehog joined the brawl, which was weird, but a few guest characters here and there never hurt anyone.

Fast forward to 2019 and the roster of Super Smash Bros Ultimate increasingly resembles one of those fake leaked images that people used to share in the build up to a new game. If you'd told me a few years ago that Pac-Man, Banjo Kazooie, Cloud Strife, Bayonetta, and bloody Sans from Undertale would be playable characters in a Smash Bros game, I would have laughed you out of the room. But that's where we are right now, and with even more DLC characters on the way, I have no idea how much deeper into madness creator Masahiro Sakurai is willing to go.

One of the most common characters you'll see, either on fake rosters or videos and articles about dream fighter picks in Super Smash Bros, is Dragon Ball Z's Goku. People have been obsessed about getting him in the game since the days of Super Smash Bros Melee, for reasons I've never been able to figure out. But while I could at least argue ten years ago that his inclusion would have made no sense, the increasing randomness of the Smash Bros Ultimate roster has me believing anyone is fair game. You could be the next DLC character, for all I know.

Except as it turns out, we can finally rule out Goku in Smash once and for all. During the Tokyo Game Show, Sakurai confirmed that only video game characters will ever be included in the brawler. "I get all these kinds of requests from abroad like, 'Where is my beloved Iron Man?' or 'Where is my beloved Goku? However, basically (Smash) will only have content from video games in it, Sakurai said, as translated by Twitter user PushDustin.

"Video game characters only" is a pretty solid rule, and one that still leaves the door open for all manner of insane possibilities going forward. With at least another year of DLC fighters planned, who knows who we might see join the fray next? Just not Goku. Never Goku. Please then, let's finally stop talking about Goku in Smash. Please.
