PlayStation has confirmed that Spider-Man will be coming to Marvel's Avengers game as a free exclusive.

In a PlayStation Blog post shared today, the company said Spidey won't be joining the others on launch day - 4 September - but will be made available free of charge and exclusively to PlayStation users sometime 'in early 2021'.

As it's a PlayStation exclusive, it won't be available to Xbox or PC gamers.

The post goes on to say that 'like the rest of our heroes in Marvel's Avengers, we will offer multiple cosmetic outfits and gameplay experience options, so you can make your vision of the wall crawler a reality'.

The blog also promises that the Peter Parker fans will find in the game is a 'familiar but fresh Spider-Man'.

Spider-Man will join Ms. Marvel, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, and Black Widow in the new game, designed by Crystal Dynamics.

The game was originally set to be released in May this year, but that was pushed back in January with the company saying in order to 'deliver the ultimate Avenger's gaming experience' it would need to shift its launch date.

Announcing the delay in a statement, the company said it would be using the extra time to 'polish' and 'fine-tune' the game before promising that it would be 'worth the wait'.

It read: "As fans ourselves, it's an honour and a privilege to work with these legendary characters and we know what these Super Heroes mean to us and True Believers around the world.

"When we set out to bring you our vision for Marvel's Avengers, we committed to delivering an original story-driven campaign, engaging co-op, and compelling content for years to come.

"To that end, we will spend this additional development time focusing on fine tuning and polishing the game to the high standards our fans expect and deserve.

"The worldwide teams working on Marvel's Avengers sincerely appreciate the support you've shown us. We thrive on your enthusiasm and feedback and we can't wait to show you more. We apologise for the delay. We're confident it will be worth the wait."
