The 4v1 Resident Evil Game Has A Story Mode To Play Offline
While the focus of Project Resistance, a new Resident Evil game that pits four human survivors against a zombie army controlled by the Mastermind player, is clearly multiplayer, that doesn't mean you won't have anything to do if the internet goes down. Resistance's project lead Kawata Masachika says that there's a whole offline mode that's focused on story.
"We are fully aware that there many are Resident Evil fans that expect the story in the game," Masachika told Sony in a PS Blog post. "In an effort to satisfy our fans, we will have an offline mode that is focused on the narrative component." Now, that doesn't necessarily mean single-player, or a campaign that's separate to the online game. Potentially, it means you can play as a survivor or the Mastermind against bots.
Masachika also revealed other aspects of the game which weren't clear from the initial trailers. For one, the Mastermind isn't some abstract force, but a character you can select. The Mastermind we've seen so far is called Daniel, but there are others that will be revealed, presumably each with a different specialty and series of buffs.
Similarly, there are more characters than the four survivors we've seen so far. Each one has a special ability and strengths and weaknesses that will push a party to play differently to succeed. "There are many variations of the Mastermind," Masachika said. "The same goes for the survivors and there are more survivors with unique skills and looks that we are planning to add into the game."

The set up for the game is that "the Mastermind works for Umbrella Corps to kidnap citizens," Masachika explains. "These human test subjects are forced to face zombies for research on how to develop viruses." As survivors, you're trying to escape, as the Mastermind you're trying to kill off the humans.
Resistance's four-play co-op looks familiar for any fans of Resident Evil Outbreak, but the added component of having one player control the infected should create quite a different dynamic. After all, now, as a survivor, you have a specific person you can blame for anything going wildly wrong.
We still don't have a release date for Project Resistance, but with the game already in closed beta it's looking like a 2020 release.
