Black Ops 4 Launch Achieves Record Digital Sales, Physical Sales Lowest In A Decade

Black Ops 4 Launch Achieves Record Digital Sales, Physical Sales Lowest In A Decade

Activision and Treyarch are enduring a pretty successful launch campaign for Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII, despite physical sales coming in at an 11-year low.

According to the UK Charts, Black Ops IIII sold 50% less physical copies than last year's Call of Duty: WWII, and 59% less than its predecessor, Black Ops III.

Despite the decline, the new title managed to enter the UK Charts at number one for this week's biggest boxed sales. Even more, Black Ops IIII is the second highest physical launch of the year, and that's without its impressive digital sales numbers - we'll get to that in a minute.

58% of sales came from PS4 users, 41% on Xbox One, and the last 1% came from the PC SKU. Only FIFA 19's launch managed to out sell Black Ops IIII for 2018.

That's quite an impressive feat, even if it is the worst start to a Call of Duty game since Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare released in 2007. The same can't be said for digital sales, however.

As announced by Activision, Black Ops IIII set a new digital sales record for the video game publishers, and it doesn't stop there.

It earned a launch day record for games sold through the PlayStation Store, meaning it's the fastest-selling digital game in PlayStation history.

Also, Xbox One users pushed Black Ops IIII to become Activision's biggest Xbox digital launch. PC wise, it achieved a new franchise record, thanks to digital PC launch sales coming in at more than double that of Call of Duty: WWII.

Maybe this was down to Black Ops IIII being offered through Blizzard's Battle.net service for the first time, rather than Steam, or the fact that it was the first Call of Duty to release this early - the last COD to do so was Call of Duty 2, in 2005.
