'Resident Evil: Project Resistance' Officially Revealed In First Trailer

'Resident Evil: Project Resistance' Officially Revealed In First Trailer

Following on from last month's cryptic tease, Capcom has officially unveiled its brand new Resident Evil game. It's looking like, as was previously reported, Project Resistance will indeed be a four-player co-op experience not entirely dissimilar to Left 4 Dead.

The existence of Project Resistance was first hinted at when it came to light that Capcom had been recruiting Resident Evil fans in Japan to playtest a secret new title. While we couldn't confirm for certain that it would be a Resi game at the time, a teaser site then appeared that teased the reveal of Project Resistance on September 9 (today). The logo and aesthetic of the teaser site all but confirmed it would be a Resident Evil spinoff of some kind, and now we can definitively say that it is.

Check out the sweet new CG trailer below.

As you can see from the footage above, Capcom isn't giving too much away at this stage, although the developer promises to show off actual gameplay during the Tokyo Game Show later this week, where attendees will also get the chance to go hands-on with the upcoming title.

While I'm sure there are a fair few fans who are disappointed to learn that the new game is a spinoff and not the long-rumoured Resident Evil 8 or Resident Evil 3 Remake, this multiplayer spin on the survival horror franchise could be an interesting change of pace. It's certainly not the first time Capcom has tried something new with Resi either, though previous attempts have garnered... mixed results.

Perhaps the most popular multiplayer take on Resi was the Outbreak series of spinoffs. If you're too young to remember, or if it just passed you by at the time, Resident Evil Outbreak was an online multiplayer survival in which various survivors worked together and used their different skills and abilities to get out alive. It was praised for its ideas at the time, and certainly has its fans, but the technological limitations of the time meant that it simply didn't sell all that well.

It's unclear exactly how close to Outbreak Project Resistance will be, but the trailer certainly gives off more of an action-oriented vibe as the four survivors fight against a zombie, followed swiftly by a Licker, before Mr X himself strides through a door to face down our heroes, seemingly controlled by some shady character behind the scenes.

We'll learn more in the next few days, and I already can't wait.
