The Spear In ‘Horizon Zero Dawn’ Came From A ‘God Of War’ Developer
In early versions of Horizon Zero Dawn, the main character Aloy wasn't armed with a spear. The idea came from a visiting God of War developer, who spent a few months building a rough version of the weapon.
According to VG247, co-founder and managing director of Guerrilla Games Hermen Hulst speaking at Reboot Develop Dubrovnik told the story of how the developer suggested the idea and was asked "Well, why don't you create a high-level design before you leave?". The design was fleshed out and pitched to the game's directors who loved the idea, incorporating it into the game.
The spear is more that just a simple melee weapon, it becomes the tool with which you can override and control the wild robots that populate the world of Horizon Zero Dawn. It's a really neat way of making Aloy both a primitive fighter and also letting her interact with highly advanced technology.
Guerilla Games and God of War developer Sony Santa Monica have an employee transfer programme which they run twice a year. Developers from each studio swap studios, learning how each team functions, and getting to work on different major game productions.
Apparently, Guerilla Games also has similar transfer programmes with Media Molecule and frequently has conference calls with Naughty Dog.
