The Vatican Now Has Its Own ‘Minecraft’ Server
The Vatican has for centuries been recognised and revered as for its stunning architecture, as the spiritual home of the Catholic faith, and of course for its dank MLG skills. Except, not that last one.
That could be about to change, though, as one plucky young priest has taken it upon himself to fire up the holy broadband connection and create a server based in the city-state to cater towards a non-toxic Minecraft experience, that people can use as a base to build, create and socialise risk free. Actually, that sounds pretty dang cool.
Back in September (as covered by PC Gamer), Father Robert Ballecer tweeted out to his followers to see which game they would most like him to create a non-toxic server for, and an overwhelming 64% of the vote went to the block-themed behemoth. In case you were wondering, the other games were RUST, ARK: Survival Evolved and Team Fortress 2 - the latter being the next-closest game, with 22% of the vote.
Father Ballecer has done previous stints as a tech blogger and software developer, and hosts The Week in Tech alongside his duties as a priest, so he likely knows a thing or two when it comes to setting up his own Minecraft server.
Speaking to Rome Reports, Ballecer stated that he wanted to help create a space for "gamers who want a little less 'toxic' and a bit more community". He continued: "You can invite people who want to be creative, who don't want to be toxic, and you create an environment in which people can express themselves and build up a relationship. And the relationship thing is the most important part. That's ultimately what I want to do with the server."

I think it's fair to say the Catholic Church has weathered its fair share of criticism in recent years, but you'd have to be pretty sour-faced to bemoan a priest attempting to create a better, more inclusive place for people to create and socialise safely together online.
If you're looking to check it out, the server is up and running right now over at minecraft.digitaljesuit.com - although as a new tweet shows, it's already incredibly popular. No promises the Pope himself will show up and help you requiescat in pace The Ender Dragon though.
