The Witcher Author Vows Ed Sheeran Will Never Sing On The Show
I would like to start this article by saying I have nothing against Ed Sheeran personally, okay? Yes, I'd rather pierce my eardrums with safety pins than listen to a single second of his back catalogue, but there are lots of people out there who love him... so he must be doing something right, right? Just don't ask me what it is, because his continued success is as astonishing as when you go into a motorway service station and see they've still got a Wimpy's.
I'm not a fan of Sheeran then, I think we've established that. As it turns out, this is at least one thing I now know for sure I have in common with Andrejz Sapowski, author of The Witcher series of novels which inspired the massively successful CD Projekt RED games and new Netflix series.
During an event last year, Sapowski vowed that the "Shape of You" singer would never appear in Netflix's The Witcher to perform a song. You'd think that might not be something one needs to promise fans, but Game of Thrones viewers will no doubt remember the infamous moment Sheeran showed up in an episode for literally no reason other than to perform a little tune.
It was, suffice to say, a widely reviled move. Not because everyone hates Sheeran (they clearly don't), but because having one of the biggest artists on the planet show up in a fantasy show to play... well, basically himself, was immersion breaking in the worst possible way.

Cearly the reaction to Sheeran's infamous GoT cameo has empowered Sapowski in his role as the creative consultant on the Netflix adaptation of his books to give Sheeran a wide berth. According to The Gamer, The Witcher author made it clear that Sheeran will never appear alongside Henry Cavill's Geralt to perform.
"I believe that my job as a creative consultant for this series is to make sure that at NO point in the show [will] Ed Sheeran sing," he explained. "And I will make sure that doesn't happen. I will make sure."
Obviously this was nothing more than a playful dig at Game of Thrones first and foremost, but I also like to think it's something of a mission statement for The Witcher as it heads into its second series. No pointless celebrity cameos, please and thank you.
Not having Sheeran in The Witcher will hardly be a great loss though, will it? I mean, we already have Jaskier for all our musical needs. Frankly, "Toss A Coin To Your Witcher" is a better tune than anything Sheeran has ever come up with. Certified banger. Don't @ me.
