If you don't know what happens to your social media accounts when you die, you're lucky. You have been fortunate enough to not lose anyone close enough to you to notice.
However, it's still very interesting - what does happen?
Let's find out...

When you die, your account can either be permanently deleted or it can become a memorial where friends and family can still post on your wall etc.
At the moment, you can choose a 'legacy contact' who has limited control of your account once you're dead. They can turn your profile into a memorial, post a final status and moderate any unsuitable comments that are posted on your wall.

Twitter is happy to work with a person who has been authorised to act on behalf of you when you die or an immediate family member. They will need to provide Twitter with an extensive list of proof, including your death certificate and a copy of ID.
However, unlike Facebook, your family will NOT be able to send your final Tweet. They won't get any access to your account whatsoever - it just gets deactivated.

Like Facebook, your account will be able to be memorialised. All your selfies are safe - don't worry. However, like Twitter, no-ones allowed access into your account.
According to the Mirror: "Posts the deceased person shared stay on Instagram and are visible to the audience they were shared with, but memorialised accounts don't appear in public spaces like searches."

So there you go. Don't worry - you'll be immortal on some social media platforms. That's pretty cool, right?
