When Ultimate Team goes wrong

A father of four found himself in a Messi situation when his children spent £550 trying to sign their favourite player on FIFA Ultimate Team. The mischievous youngsters racked up the bill on FIFA 19 on the Nintendo Switch console after buying multiple player packs in three weeks trying to unlock Lionel Messi.

If you play FIFA Ultimate Team, then you know just how addictive it can be. Real money can be used to buy special packs which can improve your virtual team. These packs include a random selection of players and items, with the chances of getting the best players being very slim.

As a little treat, their father had treated his children to one player pack. Little did he know that they had observed him making the purchase and memorised how to do it themselves. Rookie error.

Thomas Carter and his wife only found out when their card was declined due to an empty bank account. We've all been there to be fair.

Mr. Carter told the BBC: "I just never thought [the children] would do it." I don't think he'll be making that mistake ever again.

Fortunately, Nintendo have agreed to give the family a full refund but have removed all of the purchased players too. The kids must be absolutely gutted.

The addictive pay-to-play nature of certain computer games has been under criticism lately, and the father-of-four had his say: "You pay £40 for the game, which is a lot of money in itself, but then the only way to get a great team is essentially by gambling.

"They spent £550 and they still never got their favourite player, Lionel Messi."

They could probably have paid this Messi look-a-like less than that to actually visit their kids in person.

If you're a FIFA fan, then you'll know that the release of FIFA 20 is closer than ever. Information about the Ultimate Edition has come out, which will give you an advantage over other FIFA Ultimate Team Players.

Here's what's included:

  • Untradeable FUT 20 Ones To Watch Player Item
  • Three Days Early Access (Play starting on September 24 if you purchase it digitally)
  • Up To 24 FIFA 20 Ultimate Team Rare Gold Packs (two Per Week For 12 Weeks)
  • Choose one of five mid-version ICON Items for five FUT matches Special Edition FUT Kits

If FIFA isn't your jam, then rivals Konami have released details about their football sim, Pro Evolution Soccer 2020 too. They've added Manchester United to their licensed teams, which is great if you want to digitally battle it out for sixth place.

If you're a parent who has bought their kids the latest version of FIFA, you might want to activate spending controls as soon as possible otherwise you might find yourself doing a Portsmouth.
