You're sat on a train listening to a gripping podcast and then suddenly, without warning, disaster strikes - your headphones are dead. It's a modern tragedy.

Well, Apple has today released its second generation ear pods, which the company says will last longer than the OGs, allowing for 50 percent more talk time, so you won't have to worry about losing power while out and about. Hooray.

The tech giant's CEO, Tim Curry, launched the upgrade by poking fun at a photo he had tweeted yesterday, showing him writing the word 'hello' onto an iPad - which has gone on to become an internet meme.

But in today's tweet 'hello' had been replaced by a pair of the second-generation pods. Top bants, Tim, so meta.

Sadly, however, the new pair of pods won't be any cheaper than the old ones, but costing $159 they also won't be any dearer than the current models, so that's something.

Like any Apple product, though, there is the option to upgrade, so if you'd prefer to go cordless you can opt to buy a pair with the Wireless Charging Case also available for the princely sum of $199.

But don't worry if this isn't for you straight away, you can pick up the wireless case separately at a later date for $79 and both chargers offer up to 24 hours of battery life and five hours of music playback on one charge.

The snazzy port works with any Qi-based wireless charger and includes an LED on the front of the case to indicate the pods' level of charge.

And according to the Apple, the new pods will allow users to switch between an iPhone, Apple Watch or iPod, twice as quickly as before.

For the first time, they also feature the 'Hey Siri' feature, making it easier to change songs, make a phone call, adjust the volume or get directions.

Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, said: "AirPods delivered a magical wireless experience and have become one of the most beloved products we've ever made. They connect easily with all of your devices, and provide crystal clear sound and intuitive, innovative control of your music and audio.

"The world's best wireless headphones just got even better with the new AirPods. They are powered by the new Apple-designed H1 chip which brings an extra hour of talk time, faster connections, hands-free 'Hey Siri' and the convenience of a new wireless battery case."

The second generation AirPods and charging packs are available to order online and are due to be in available in stores from next week.
