Apple could face an £11 billion tax bill after the European Commission decided the company's tax arrangements with the Irish government were illegal.

The three-year investigation found Apple to be paying just 1 percent effectively in corporation tax in what has been dubbed a 'sweetheart deal'.

Ireland's corporation tax is already a relatively low 12.5 percent but the European Commission has deemed the arrangement illegal.

The Irish government and Apple are expected to challenge the ruling which could mean a huge political and financial dispute about the role the European Commission plays.

The commission will argue that tax benefits for certain companies is the same as 'illegal state aid' despite Apple claiming it has been subject to the same tax laws as anyone else doing business in Ireland.

Something tells us this story is going to rumble on and on and on.
