Baby Reindeer viewers hit hard after hearing one tragic line in Netflix series

The number one TV show is based on a true story

Sure, Netflix is absolutely filled with great watches for viewers to binge through but there’s one thing in particular that’s captured people’s attention across the globe.

While there’s been plenty of drops recently, from a ‘captivating’ parasite series to true crime docs, Baby Reindeer has got everyone hooked.

The show is still sitting at number one in the UK after landing on 11 April and is also in the top 10 over in the US and Australia.

Based on a harrowing true story, it’s left viewers ‘speechless’ as it follows Richard Gadd’s real ‘warped relationship’ with his female stalker.

The comedian stars as fictional version of himself Donny Dunn, as he wrote the Netflix show named after the pet name the stalker gave him.

For six years, the 34-year-old was stalked by a woman (named as Martha in the show) before police became involved. She flooded Gadd with a whopping 41,071 emails, 744 tweets, 106 pages of letters and a jaw-dropping 350 hours of voicemail - as well as turning up to his gigs, workplace and home.

And as viewers spot tiny details in Baby Reindeer and praise the star’s work, they have been hit hard after hearing one specific tragic line.

During the series, Donny dates girlfriend Teri, which Gadd told The Independent drew on experiences of his own and his relationship with a trans woman.

The star described having feelings of shame attached to his own sexuality so he kept his name and work a secret from her.

He explained: “It’s in the public consciousness now, but it wasn’t back then, when I was dating.

“It felt so new that it added a certain pressure, to me, that I really regret now. But that’s what it explores in the show. This story was set back in a time when things were very different."

Hitting viewers hard, during a monologue in episode six, Donny tragically says: “I loved one thing in the world more than her, hating myself.”

Viewers on X quoted the line, writing: “Richard Gadd's #BabyReindeer explores self hatred left in the wake of abuse. Gadd writes a raw over exposed narrative and delivers a brilliant performance of dangerous vulnerability.”

Another wrote: “Baby Reindeer was incredible, the bit that hit me personally… ‘I loved one thing in the world more than I did her I loved hating myself’.”

As others posted to TikTok: “This got me. I feel so bad for this man.”

Baby Reindeer is streaming on Netflix.
