The saying goes that dogs are a man's best friend. But it seems dogs can also be incredible mates to one another, after some four-legged pals mourned the loss of their dead chum by staging a full-on sit-in.

WATCH THE HEARTBREAKING MOMENT THE DOGS STAYED PUT:

A pack of stray dogs plonked themselves in the middle of a busy road and refused to budge after a fellow stray dog lost its life to a car.

The five animals had been crossing the road when one of the strays was mowed down by the car in the city of Lanzhou, northwest China.

Although the four other dogs safely made it to the other side of the road, they soon ran back into the middle of the street to stay by their fallen furry friend.

Those who witnessed the touching moment said that the dogs kept nuzzling their buddy in an attempt to make him get up.

People have speculated that the dogs didn't understand that their pal had been killed and were standing around the body to protect it from other oncoming cars.

It wasn't exactly safe for the dogs who survived to go back into the middle of the road, as cars continued to drive by while they stood guard.

The short video captured by a bystander, which you can watch above, shows drivers trying to maneuver around the dogs on both sides of the road.

Of course, the tragic clip has tugged on the heartstrings of tons of people who would hate to see the same happen to their own beloved pets.

Soon after being posted on Weibo, the Chinese social media site equivalent to Twitter, people rushed to share the clip, quickly sending it viral.

Posting their own comments next to the video, viewers drew attention to the intense bond that obviously existed between the dogs to make them return to harm's way despite making it to safety. They must have been really good mates.

"If only humans could be more like these dogs," one Weibo user wrote.

Local reports said that the dogs eventually left after someone stepped in to clear the road, moving the dead dog's body to one side. It must have been hard for them to do.

It's a sad but inspiring story. You'd hope that when you eventually meet your maker, your mates will be right there by you too.
