Woman who found out she accidentally married her cousin says it’s brought them closer together

Woman who found out she accidentally married her cousin says it’s brought them closer together

Celina Quinones reckons the shock revelation was a 'blessing' in disguise

There's seeing the glass as half full in life and then there's this woman, who is making gallons of lemonade out of the lemons life handed her.

Celina Quinones hasn't let a little thing like finding out she had accidentally married her cousin get her down and instead believes the bizarre revelation has been a 'blessing' in disguise which has brought them even closer together.

She and her husband Joseph got hitched in July 2006 after being in a relationship for several years, before welcoming three children into the world.

Ten years after tying the knot, the mum spontaneously decided to dig into the details of her family tree by sending off her DNA to find out more about her ancestry - only to discover that the father of her kids was in fact her cousin.

You can imagine the look on her face after opening that post.

Celina, from Colorado, did what most people do in this day and age when they open a can of worms they wish they hadn't and made a TikTok about the awkward situation, which subsequently went viral.

Inviting social media users to give their two pence about Joseph being her 'cousband' obviously prompted a lot of negativity online, which came much to the surprise of the mum.

"I thought it would be funny to put out there,” Celina told People. "I did not know that it would really turn into... and so that was a shock."

Although she debated deleting the post, she ultimately decided against it because she realised that 'this is her story and she is going to stick to it'.

Celina explained that her and Joseph had already broken the news to their three children - two teenage boys and an 11-year-old girl - about the fact she and their dad were cousins.

But thankfully, their reactions had been a lot tamer than those of social media users.

She continued: "My son goes, 'Well, if we're brothers and sisters, that make us cousins too?'

"They're like, 'Hey, Mom, Dad, it don't matter. You guys have been married for so long. That's our family.'"

Celina said they received a similar reception from their friends and colleagues, who she jokingly said were more shocked that the pair had achieved viral fame.

The mum says the frenzy which followed her posting the video was similar to opening up a 'Pandora's box', but she has also got to hear some 'amazing' stories from people who have somehow run into the same 'cousband' problem.

"People DM me and say, 'Wow, I have a similar situation'," she added. "Or they bring up their other DNA issues where they met sisters or brothers."

But how is her and Joseph's relationship since divulging just how close they are - right down to their DNA - to the world?

Celina said: "We're doing good.

"My husband and I made it to our 18th year of marriage. So that's been a blessing. We're just cherishing the moments... I feel like it's brought us together even more."
