Furious neighbour hits out at woman for having BBQ in her own garden

Furious neighbour hits out at woman for having BBQ in her own garden

The woman said she should have been given a warning

A woman says her neighbour was furious with her after she held a barbecue without warning her first

Back in the summer, like many Brits - the unnamed British woman decided to make the most of the weather and host a barbecue.

However, the following day her ‘mightily annoyed’ next-door neighbour confronted the woman over the fence - telling her she should have warned her beforehand as the smoke had made its way into her garden and made her clean washing, which was hanging on the line, smell.

The woman took to Mumsnet to ask if she was wrong, or if the neighbour had gone slightly over the top.

In the post, she explained that her neighbours had always been polite until this point.

She went on: “This time however she looked mightily annoyed and said along the lines of ‘next time you decide to have a stinking barbecue in your garden please let me know in advance, my washing was out drying and it got ruined. I had to do the whole lot again’.

“I was a bit taken aback by her tone but replied and said, ‘I’m really sorry, I didn’t even think. Next time I’ll give you a knock and you can take your washing in.’

“She replied and said, ‘No I won’t be taking my washing in, if I have washing out you won’t be able to have a barbecue!’ And she stormed off.

“Now, I’ll be honest it didn’t even occur to me to let the neighbours know I was having a barbecue but, yes, OK I see that in future it would be courteous to let them know. But AIBU [am I being unreasonable] to think that even if my next-door neighbour has clothes out I can have the barbecue anyway?”

The post divided fellow Mumsnet users with some saying she’d done nothing wrong and others telling her it would have been best to warn her neighbour prior to the barbie.

One person said: “I can see if my immediate neighbours have washing out so I do check, and I would let them know so that they could get the washing in.

“Your neighbour sounds quite stroppy though, she obviously doesn't want you to BBQ whether she has washing out or not.”

Someone else said: “If an immediate neighbour has washing out I’d warn them. Why wouldn’t you?”

A third commented: “She sounds awful! I have never pre-warned any neighbour about a BBQ!”
