James Franco has won the 2018 Golden Globe for Best Actor In A Motion Picture (musical or comedy), thanks to his role as Tommy Wiseau in The Disaster Artist.
The film tells the tale of French filmmaker Wiseau's attempts to make his directorial debut The Room, an independently-made romantic drama. Widely panned upon its release, due to its extraordinary combination of bad acting, poor dialogue and nonsensical plot, The Room later gained a cult following, with Wiseau regularly requested to attend screenings around the world.
It has also been referred to by Ross Morin, an assistant professor of film studies at Minnesota's St. Cloud State University, as 'the Citizen Kane of bad movies'.

Also nominated were Steve Carell (Battle of the Sexes), Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver), Hugh Jackman (The Greatest Showman) and Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out).
Many expected Kaluuya to take the award following his memorable performance in Jordan Peele's horror movie Get Out, but Franco's starring role in The Disaster Artist proved strong enough to take the gong.
Franco thanked old friends such as Freaks and Geeks co-star Seth Rogen, and invited both his younger brother Dave and Wiseau to the stage as he accepted the award, thanking those around him for making him 'a better director'.

Wiseau attempted to grab the mic to add a few words, but a laughing Franco prevented him from doing so.
Reaction across social media was mixed - however, no image summed it up better than this image of an open-mouthed Hugh Jackman:
Franco's film was based on the book The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside The Room, the Greatest Bad Movie Ever Made by Greg Sestero - Wiseau's co-star in The Room - and Tom Bissell.
