Rupert Grint has opened up about his 'tricky' relationship with JK Rowling

Rupert Grint has opened up about his 'tricky' relationship with JK Rowling

The Harry Potter author isn't looking for 'apologies' from the stars

Rupert Grint previously opened up about his ‘tricky’ relationship with JK Rowling.

The author took to X in a recent rant, making it clear that stars of Harry Potter can ‘save their apologies’.

That’s if (for some reason) they went begging Rowling for forgiveness for their support of trans rights, while she tends to share more controversial views.

The Harry Potter creator has been accused of transphobia over the years, while stars like Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson have publicly shared their support for the trans community.

And as Rowling continues to air her opinions online, one user responded: “Just waiting for Dan and Emma to give you a very public apology ... safe in the knowledge that you will forgive them…”

But the multi-millionaire said: “Not safe, I'm afraid. Celebs who cosied up to a movement intent on eroding women's hard-won rights and who used their platforms to cheer on the transitioning of minors can save their apologies for traumatised detransitioners and vulnerable women reliant on single-sex spaces."

Grint starred alongside Radcliffe and Watson in the films as Ron Weasly after being cast in the first film at the age of just 11.

Now 35, he spoke to The Sunday Times in 2022 about his relationship with the author of the popular stories.

“I liken JK Rowling to an auntie. I don’t necessarily agree with everything my auntie says, but she’s still my auntie,” he said. “It’s a tricky one."

The actor also previously featured in HBO Max's Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts and his comments towards Watson had her welling up with tears before breaking the tension with a joke.

In a touching moment, Grint said: “We’re family, we always will be. It’s a strong bond, we’ll always be part of each other’s lives.”

Then, after a heartfelt embrace, he added: “I love you.” After a short pause, he added: “As friends.”

In 2020, when Rowling first began facing backlash and accusations of transphobia, Grint said in a statement that he ‘firmly stands with the trans community’. The actor said: “Trans women are women. Trans men are men. We should all be entitled to live with love and without judgment."

Radcliffe also made his support clear, apologising for the 'pain' which the author had caused for people in an open letter for LGBTQ+ organisation The Trevor Project.

And Watson told her trans followers online that she and 'so many other people around the world see you, respect you and love you for who you are'.

LADbible has contacted Grint’s team for comment.

The Voldemort actor told The New York Times in 2022: "The verbal abuse directed at her is disgusting, it’s appalling.

"I can understand a viewpoint that might be angry at what she says about women. But it’s not some obscene, uber-right-wing fascist. It’s just a woman saying, ‘I’m a woman and I feel I’m a woman and I want to be able to say that I’m a woman.’"

Melling, who played Dudley Dursley, told the Independent in 2022: "I can only speak for myself, and what I feel, to me, is very simple, which is that transgender women are women and transgender men are men."

Evanna Lynch

Lynch played Luna Lovegood in the films and told the Telegraph: "I just felt that her character has always been to advocate for the most vulnerable members of society. The problem is that there’s a disagreement over who’s the most vulnerable.

"I do wish people would just give her more grace and listen to her."
