As well as having a great on-screen relationship Andy Samberg and Chelsea Peretti are old pals in real life, which helps to explain their great on-screen chemistry.

The Brooklyn Nine-Nine stars - who appear as Jake Peralta and Gina Linetti respectively - actually go way, way back - as this adorable throwback snap shows:

The photo surfaced on Reddit a couple of years back and fans of the show were delighted with the fact they were pals in real life.

One fan said: "I'm so happy they are actually close friends IRL."

Another commented: "They actually have mentioned how they are long time friends on the show."

But as well as being long-time friends, Peretti has also revealed that she had a little crush on her pal a long time ago.

Speaking on Conan O'Brien's chat show Conan, she said: "We went to elementary school... I had a huge crush on Andy and he, for some reason, will never acknowledge this, when I bring it up, he just dead-eyes me.

"I used to call his house on like those old-timey phones that we used to have. I would call and hang up, call and hang up as some young girls do. Irritating young girls.

"I don't know what my end game was really, I didn't have a plan, there was no emojis then, that would have made it so easy you know, to flirt with him."

Peretti left the show after season six, announcing the news on Twitter back in 2018, she said: "I won't be doing a full season of Brooklyn Nine Nine in Season 6. But that doesn't mean I won't ever be back, winky face emoji, heart emoji.

"I want to thank you for the hours you spent watching Gina be Gina: confident, idiotic-but-smart, pithy, and infused with rhythm and cell-phone radiation. It is hard for me to know exactly what to say."

Meanwhile, the show's final season is set to land in August on NBC.

Susan Rovner, from NBCUniversal Television, said: "It will launch in August, coming out of the Summer Olympics, which is a coveted slot. We can think of nothing more deserving than giving it to the final season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

"This is a beloved show and we wanted to give it a slot where it had access to the biggest possible audience."
