The first picture of the suspect in this afternoon's London terror attack has been released.

He is seen lying on a stretcher as he is treated by medical staff. The man was wheeled into an ambulance after being shot by police and is now confirmed as dead. He was shot after stabbing a police officer, who was killed, outside the Houses of Parliament.

Two people have also been killed after a 4x4 vehicle collided with pedestrians on Westminster Bridge, with others hurt - some with 'catastrophic' injuries, on the way to the attack.

The assailant proceeded to attack the police officer with a knife in the grounds of the Houses of Parliament, before being shot by authorities.

Downing Street has confirmed that British Prime Minister Theresa May was in parliament when the attack happened but is now safe, and Transport for London said Westminster underground station has been shut at the police's request.

A joint statement from Commons Speaker John Bercow and Lord Fowler, the Lord Speaker, said: "On behalf of Members of both Houses of Parliament, we wish to offer our thoughts to all those affected and their families.

"We would also like to express our gratitude to the police and all emergency services."
