The old dating game can be a cruel and fickle mistress, as one young singleton discovered in a fairly brutal way.

Jacques, from Manchester, met up with a would-be suitor recently, but safe to say it didn't go quite as well as either of them had hoped.

While some people just don't click, Jacques' date claimed they got the 'ick' because of some of the phrases he used.

Shocked by the bizarre rejection, the 23-year-old shared a screengrab of the message he received from his date, who was brazen enough to ask him for advice on the local nightlife after saying he never wanted to see him again.

It read: "Hey man, sorry for not messaging until now. I enjoyed our date last week but when you said the phrase: 'put my thinking cap on' it kinda gave me the ick so I wasn't really interested in pursuing things.

"Also, do you know of any, like, soul-funk hip hop disco kind of vibes DJs in Manchester?"

Understandably, Jacques wasn't having any of it, posting the message with the caption: "Ah right ok then."

Since it was shared to Twitter, Jacques' post has received more than 128,000 likes, with hundreds piling into the comments to show him some support.

One person said: "This is honestly the worst. I cannot believe people like this exist. I am actually astounded."

Another chimed in: "Hey our date was cool but you said one thing that's totally normal, so I don't think I'm gonna be seeing you again.

"Oh hey by the way can you help me find a dj within the same rejection message. I don't realize I look callous but clearly don't care as long as I find this DJ."

"Honestly people are so dumb and shallow. My partner says stupid stuff all the time and I just go 'Uhuh' and laugh- this person isn't ready to date really so they're projecting into the 'fault' being on you rather than look at themselves," slammed a third.

While yet another added: "But the much-beloved phrase 'gave me the ick' is highly favourable."

One person even offered Jacques the perfect response: "Please say you replied with, 'I'll have to put my thinking cap on'."

And it didn't go down too well, with Jacques' date blocking him right after he sent it.

So, I guess that's that then.
