Another Storm Will Dump Eight Inches Of Snow On The UK Tonight

Another Storm Will Dump Eight Inches Of Snow On The UK Tonight

The storm, separate to Storm Fionn which hit the UK yesterday, will drop its payload on Scotland, Northern Ireland and the North of England.

Yesterday we warned our fellow Brits to have your windscreen scrapers and your hot chocolates at the ready as Storm Fionn slowly made its way across the UK.

Now people in Scotland and the North of England can expect to get buried in snow tonight as a separate storm is set to prolong travel havoc across the country.

The Met Office has confirmed that parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England can expect up to 20cm (8 in) of snow, also warning of 70mph winds in some places. Wrap up tight then!

Scotland's taking a particular hammering at the moment as the country is subject to an amber weather warning, bringing with it treacherous driving conditions.

Last night traffic bosses closed parts of the motorway in both directions last night due to heavy snow showers - with cars tailing back for six miles in some places.

Some drivers on the M74 motorway in Lanarkshire were forced to spend the night in their cars as the conditions left them completely stranded, leaving them needing assistance from mountain rescue teams. Brutal.

While the road has now been re-opened and is currently open, Transport Scotland said that conditions remain challenging after 'a very difficult night'. I bet it was.

A spokesman said: "Sustained wintry conditions have been experienced overnight, particularly on the M74 between J12 and J15. Various incidents have occurred, often relating to HGVs losing traction on steep gradients."

"Wintry conditions remain and all available gritting resources are patrolling and treating the network as appropriate."

Large parts of England and Wales aren't faring much better either as they remain under a slightly lower yellow weather warning.

Meteorologist Alex Burkill said: "There have been plenty of heavy snow showers, particularly across Scotland. It's pretty bleak out there in some places. A good chunk of the UK is effectively covered by snow and ice warning this morning."

He added: "It is going to be quite windy as low pressure pushes through tonight and that could bring some snow across parts of Scotland and in particular northern England."

That won't be the complete end of the awful weather though - according to Burkill, Great Britain can expect further showers through Thursday and Friday.

The weekend can't come soon enough, eh?
