Mum Insists She's Not Racist After 'Blacking Up' Daughter For Halloween

Mum Insists She's Not Racist After 'Blacking Up' Daughter For Halloween

Let's assess the facts, shall we?

A mother who dressed her child up in blackface for Halloween has insisted that she isn't racist.

Well, let's just look at the evidence, shall we?

Claire Flynn is a 26-year-old nursery employee from Motherwell, in Scotland. Before we even get to the fact that she blacked up the face of her young daughter, Sienna.

Let's just quickly visit the theme of the costume.

She dressed her young child up as a 'Lookie Lookie' man. A man who sells sunglasses and small bits of stuff on a beach. You will have spotted them if you've ever been on holiday to anywhere around the Mediterranean.

OK, so it's not in great taste to begin with. Not off to a good start, all things considered.

Now, to the blackface element of the costume. It's a rule that is worth remembering that before you start deciding on a costume for yourself or anyone else - particularly a young child - you should ask yourself: "Do I need to black up their/my face for this costume?"

If the answer is yes, it's better to give that a wide swerve. Regardless of whether you hold or espouse racist beliefs, blackface is racist. That bears repeating - Blackface. Is. Racist.

And don't give me any shite about "but, but, black people sometimes put white make-up on their face...."

If the reason why that is different has to be explained to you, then you are as dumb as you are ignorant.

Anyway, back to the matter at hand. Claire posted a picture of the poor kid on Facebook with the caption: "Happy Halloween from Benidorm's finest... lookie lookie."

Needless to say, she was then given both barrels by people who think - rightly, I might add - that it was in very poor taste.

She defended herself afterwards, telling the Daily Record: "I'm not going to apologise for this or delete my post.

"If people want to be all PC about it they need to take a look at themselves. It's really not an issue.

"We were in Magaluf on holiday in September and Sienna got a toy monkey from the Lookie Lookie men. She loved them and wanted to go back and see them every day.

"That's when I had the idea. I'm just a creative person and that's what Halloween is all about.

"It's a kid in a costume wearing face paint. People need to get a grip.

She continued: "I'm not going to bow down to anyone that has an issue with this. I'm not a racist and I've not seen anyone calling me a racist and I'm definitely not one.

"People dress up as Jimmy Saville and no one calls them a paedophile and the people who dress up as Hitler don't get called supporters of Nazi propaganda either."

No, I'm pretty sure that people who dress up as Hitler usually get told off. Just so we're clear - that isn't on either. Neither is dressing up as Jimmy Saville.

Here's another point to take home if you still think this is OK - It's not a bad thing to be offended by things that are offensive.

Also, "I didn't mean to be offensive" isn't a strong argument if you're being really offensive.

Furthermore - and I can't stress this enough - stop blacking up, it's 2018 for fuck's sake!
