Fantastic news for lovers of snow, there's more on the way as a second 'Beast from the East' is set to hit us with as much as eight inches of snow today.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist Laura Paterson told the Sun: "Snow showers will become increasingly likely across eastern, central and southern England on Saturday and then there is the potential for some significant snowfall in places by Sunday, particularly in the South of England."

Across the UK, warnings are in place and Brits have been warned to avoid unnecessary travel. At London Heathrow Airport 70 flights have been cancelled, as a precaution against the freezing weather.

A spokesman for British Airways told the Sun: "Poor weather conditions are forecast across parts of the UK across the weekend, so we have merged a small number of flights travelling to or from Heathrow Airport."

Highways England has told motorists to avoid trans-Pennine roads if possible.

An alert from Public Health England read: "[It] may come as a shock to the system for some whose bodies may struggle to cope in cold weather.

"It's worth remembering that cold temperatures - indoors and outdoors - can affect health, particularly in young children, older people and those with heart and lung conditions."

Alton Towers, which was due to open its new Wicker Man attraction today, has been forced to close all of its rollercoasters for safety reasons.

Amber warnings are in place for the North West, East Midlands, West Midlands, East of England, London, Yorkshire and Humber and South East England.

Temperatures are set to plummet with parts of London and the South dropping as low as minus 1C tonight.

By this afternoon, most of England will be hit with wintry conditions which are set to continue across the weekend and ruin any plans you had for St Patrick's Day.

Meteorologist Martin Bowles called this weekend's weather a 'mini Beast from the East', as it will be less severe than the storm that battered the UK a few weeks back.
