Think twice if you've stopped by Costa to pick up something for lunch in the last couple of days, because the chain has issued an urgent 'do not eat' warning for some of its products.

Customers can get their hands on all sorts of snacks, meals and sweet treats at the coffee shop, with many making it a habit to stop by in the morning and pick up something for the day ahead.

Its sandwiches and wraps are an easy lunch option, but for some of these products, officials at the Food Standards Agency (FSA) have issued a warning this week.

In a notice shared yesterday (7 September), the authority announced that Costa is recalling a number of its sandwich and wrap products with use-by dates of 6 September, 7 September and 8 September.

The reason for the recall is because the products 'may contain small stones', according to the agency.

"This may present a choking hazard and are unsafe to eat," the notice says.

The affected products include the Costa Chicken & Bacon Caesar Wrap, the Costa Southern Fried Chicken Wrap, the Costa Chicken Salad Sandwich and the Costa BLT sandwich.

If you happen to have picked up one of these products with the affected use-by date, but haven't eaten it, then you can return it to the Costa you bought it from in exchange for a full refund.

The company released a statement about the recall in which it explained it had been informed of the issues with the products by a supplier.

“Costa Coffee is recalling four savoury items... We have been notified by our supplier of a possible presence of small stones that could be a choking hazard if consumed," the company said.

"Customers who bought any of the products listed should not eat them and instead, please return to a store, with or without a receipt, for a full refund...

"We take this matter extremely seriously and sincerely apologise for any concern this recall has caused.”

Costa also said that customer safety is of 'paramount importance', adding: "We take all issues regarding the production of our food extremely seriously."

Only the four savoury products listed in the recall notice are affected by the issue; none of the other products at Costa have been found to be unsafe.

Anyone who would like further information about the product recall can contact the coffee shop chain at 0333 003 5883.
