Incredibly awkward moment Martin Brundle makes Patrick Mahomes blunder during grid walk

Incredibly awkward moment Martin Brundle makes Patrick Mahomes blunder during grid walk

Martin Brundle has confused Patrick Mahomes for someone else for the second time

F1 broadcaster Martin Brundle is loved for his awkward AF interactions with celebrities.

From Cara Delevingne and Machine Gun Kelly to Megan Thee Stallion, he's managed to rattle a lot of famous faces.

Although, it seems that Brundle hasn't learnt from his previous mistake as he wrongly identified Patrick Mahomes two years after misidentifying the football player.

In 2022, Brundle mixed up NFL star Mahomes with a 19-year-old basketball player at the Miami Grand Prix.

The commentator hilariously confused the 2020 Super Bowl champion with NBA hopeful Paolo Banchero as the pair eventually saw the funny side.

"It's not Patrick, that's why he ignored me," a bemused Brundle said.

"What is your name, sir?' the presenter asked, before apologising: "Well I thought I was talking to somebody else, I'm sorry about that."

Banchero played the whole thing off on X, writing: "I'm just vibing right now man."

However, Brundle has not only gone and done the exact same thing over the weekend, kind of.

Watch below:

While he was looking for the Kansas City star at Sunday's Miami Grand Prix, he said: "That's Patrick Mahomes, isn't it?"

"I think that's the guy isn't it," he added, perhaps a bit more ironically this time.

Last year, Brundle had a 'top tier' response after he was blocked off by a security guard during his Abu Dhabi Grand Prix grid walk.

During the final grid walk of the 2023 season, the F1 veteran spotted close friend and three-time world champion Sir Jackie Stewart at the front end of the melee.

However, as the 64-year-old attempted to squeeze past the crowded grid walk he was blocked by a man who looked to be a security guard.

Bizarrely, the man refused to let Brundle through to the next segment of the grid.

"This guy sorta keeps getting hold of me," Brundle said.

"You have to let go, my friend."

The security guy then said: "I'm not going, I'm just blocking."

"You have to let go," Brundle continued, adding his 'top tier' response: "Because we've got a job to do."

With that comment, he was able to break through to the next section.

Viewers were furious with the security guard, as one person tweeted: "Some guy with lanyards just blocked @MBrundleF1 on his gridwalk. That guy might be getting fired or may have to review his info sheets of ‘people to know in Formula 1’. #MartinBrundle."

A second added: Random guy just wanting a hug with Martin Brundle… and he just looks right in his face and badge and asks 'who are you with' haha. Just peak Martin Brundle #p1 #AbuDhabiGP."

Following a string of incidents on the grid, Brundle said in 2021 that F1 introduced a new rule that celebrities walking on the grid could not bring security with them.

A spokesperson for F1 confirmed at the time that stars on the grid 'aren't obliged to do interviews' but their security detail are 'no longer allowed to accompany them'.
