A new Netflix World War I movie is being heaped with praise by critics and fans on Rotten Tomatoes. Check out the trailer here:

All Quiet on the Western Front - based on the bestselling 1920s Erich Maria Remarque of the same name - was released on the streaming platform on Friday (28 October), and so far there is a clear consensus that this movie is well worth a watch.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the critics' Tomatometer score sits at 92 percent, while the audience score is 91 percent.

The synopsis for the German-language adaptation reads: "All Quiet on the Western Front tells the gripping story of a young German soldier on the Western Front of World War I.

"Paul and his comrades experience first-hand how the initial euphoria of war turns into desperation and fear as they fight for their lives, and each other, in the trenches.

"The film from director Edward Berger is based on the world renowned bestseller of the same name by Erich Maria Remarque."

The film has received glowing reviews.

Writing for Awards Daily, Mark Johnson labelled it one of the best war films ever made.

He wrote: "All Quiet on the Western Front is a jaw-dropping film and a remarkable piece of work. It is not only one of the best films of the year but should also be remembered as one of the greatest war films of all time.

"Erich Maria Remarque would undoubtedly admire Berger's graphic take on his lesson in history, hoping against all hopes that one day we will no longer be destined to repeat it."

Meanwhile critic Leah Greenblatt wrote for Entertainment Weekly: "A film that feels both aesthetically dazzling and full of necessary truths: an antiwar drama that transcends the bombast of propaganda mostly just because it's so artfully and indelibly made."

The rave reviews have been flooding in on Twitter, too, with one viewer writing: "Went to see All Quiet on the Western Front today. What an incredible film. Genuinely brilliant, utterly gut-wrenching, and everything I hoped 1917 would be, but wasn't.

"I feel completely exhausted by it. A must-see, even if you have no interest in WW1."

The reviews have been overwhelmingly positive.

Another said: "All Quiet on the Western Front on Netflix is a masterpiece, probably one of the greatest war movies ever made.

"If Oscars do give a f**k about foreign movies, this one should be sweeping all awards."

A third added: "All Quiet on the Western Front is one of 2022's best. It's an emotional, stressful, thrilling, and bleak film that doesn't pull any punches.

"The Directing and Cinematography are top notch. This film is The Revenant + 1917. We need more war movies like this. Can't recommend enough."
