Netflix top 10 crime thriller with 'incredibly realistic' story has a near perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes

Netflix viewers are urging people to check out one of the most 'down to earth' and 'realistic' crime flicks out there.

The movie is available on Netflix where it is a top 10 most popular watch at the moment, and also has a coveted 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Don’t be expecting massive gunfights and dramatic robberies from this flick - according to viewers, the film takes a more subtle and nuanced approach, with some describing it as having a 'very stripped down, realistic vibe'.

But make no mistake, the thriller is still tense and watchers have compared it to the 2017 critically acclaimed crime-thriller Good Time by the Safdie brothers.

Emily the Criminal follows Emily (Audrey Plaza) who is saddled with student debt and can’t find work. Desperate for income, she winds up getting involved in a credit card scam, acting as a dummy shopper buying increasingly risky products with stolen cards.

Plaza plays the titular character and you might recognise her from Parks and Recreation and, more recently, The White Lotus but fans of her Netflix film claim this is one of her best performances yet.

One wrote that the 39-year-old actress was 'brilliant' and that 'this is her time'.

Not everyone is as convinced though - other watchers of Emily the Criminal have called the premise 'weak' and 'barely plausible'.

One unhappy viewer commented: “If she would've gotten laid-off and then had trouble finding employment due to her felony record, sinking further and further into desperation, I think it would have been way more believable.

“Not being able to pay rent or buy food is more of a carnal emergency than student loan debt. Also, she doesn't strike me as someone who would care that much about following the ‘rules’ of paying off debt.”

If this sounds like something up your street though, give it a watch for yourself and see what it’s all about.
