Gogglebox's Giles 'Retired At 21' And Makes Money From Second Job

The fan favourite has an interesting past

Giles and his wife Mary have become veritable fan favourites since starring in Gogglebox.

The pair hit our screens in 2015 and captured viewers' hearts with their dry humour and funny tiffs, referring to each other affectionately as 'Nutty'.

But in a recent episode of the show, Mary shed some light on Giles' interesting past.

Watching a programme about coronavirus, Giles said: "Just as I'm starting to enjoy my retirement."

However, not missing a beat, Mary replied: "What retirement? You haven't worked first.

"You retired at 21, so now you can start working – do it in reverse."

Doesn't sound too bad to me.

For those of you who don't know, when he's not sharing his thoughts on what's on the box, Giles is a fairly successful artist.

His artwork is so good that he can sell his pieces for £250 a pop. Not too shabby, Giles.

Describing his approach on his website, Giles says: "I like the contemplative aspect - sitting for several days in a room, watching the light change.

"There are as many changes as with a landscape. I always work in oils as they give more depth. The finished painting should offer an insight into the painter as well as the subject."

And it was his love of art that actually brought the couple together.

They met when Giles was a student at Wimbledon College of Art and Mary was being paid £4.50 to pose as a model, where she turned down an offer of an extra 25p per hour to pose nude.

More than 30 years later, the couple are still very happily married, and they say the show has helped improve their marriage as it allowed them to reconnect.

Speaking to the Daily Star, Mary said: "Giles and I were like ships that pass in the night.

"I got up early. He went to bed late. And we rarely even ate together.

"I know a few couples who have split up because they have decided they can't stand one another.

"Sitting down and watching television reminded us how much we enjoyed the same jokes."

Opening up about the key to their marriage success she told the publication: "You have to understand all men are really annoying one way or another.

"Would you prefer one of your friends' husbands?

"I've thought about each one in turn and concluded their habits are even more irritating than Giles'."

And Mary also revealed why she and Giles often refer to each other as 'Nutty'.

She explained: "We call each other 'nutty' because we both consider the other to be a bit mad.

"Certainly Giles has multiple personality disorder so he's all sorts of people and one of them is a bit of a genius. The truth is we're both neurotic."
