A new biopic has been commissioned to delve into the life and times of the legendary Queen of the Nile: Cleopatra.

Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot has been recruited to play the leading lady.

Deadline reports the movie was the 35-year-old's idea and it was generated by Pilot Wave. The movie was pitched to several studios, with Universal, Warner Bros, Netflix and Apple all battling it out to get the rights to produce it, however Paramount ended up winning.

Gal wrote Twitter: "I love embarking on new journeys,I love the excitement of new projects, the thrill of bringing new stories to life. Cleopatra is a story I wanted to tell for a very long time. Can't be more grateful about this A team!!"

The Marvel actor will be teaming up with Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins for the project and she has enlisted Laeta Kalogridis to write the script.

Laeta added that she was excited to work with such a dazzling array of women.

"Incredibly excited to get the chance to tell the story of Cleopatra, my favorite Ptolemaic Pharoah and arguably the most famous Macedonian Greek woman in history," she said on Twitter.

"Never thought I'd have the opportunity to tell a story like this, with women who have inspired me beyond words."

Fans went wild at the news on social media, however there were also some people who were confused why Gadot, an Israeli actor, was cast as an Egyptian queen.

One person said: "You are going to own this role queen! Can't wait to see what you and Patty cook up."

Another added: "I love Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman - the best, but I was kind of hoping that Cleopatra was going to go to say Kerry Washington, Zoe Saldana, Viola Davis, or even Halle Berry."

A third wrote: "Following in the foot steps of some legendary actresses! This will be the first time the story one of history's most remarkable women is told by women."

Cleopatra was the last active ruler of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt, reigning from 51 BC to 30 BC.

The ruler was iconically played by Elizabeth Taylor in 1963.

There has been no indication of when we can see this movie hit the big screen so we'll have to keep our eyes peeled for a release date or trailer.
